Latex paint is not considered hazardous waste and can be thrown with the trash once it has been solidified. In order to dry out latex paint, put it in a well-ventilated area, open the can and add kitty litter or commercially available hardener. The paint will solidify in a few days. Once it is completely solid, place the can of dry paint either into a plastic garbage bag or out on the curb with the lid off on your regular trash day.

To determine if your paint products are hazardous, read the label. When in doubt, read the clean-up instructions. If it says to clean up with soap and water, the paint is latex and therefore, non-hazardous. If it says to clean up with mineral spirits or paint thinner, the paint is hazardous.

Latex paint is not accepted at Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events.
